- EDL Access Read Me
- -------------------------
-
- EDL Access is a program designed to format floppy disks for use
- in CMX and Grass Valley professional editing systems, which require
- 3.5" floppy disks that are formatted in a special format known as
- RT-11. EDL Access is also used for transferring EDL files
- created in Adobe Premiere 4.0 onto those disks.
-
- Editing systems manufactured by Sony Corporation use the standard
- DOS file format for their floppy disks.
-
- In order for your computer to recognize an RT-11 formatted disk
- EDL Access must currently be running, and you must click on the
- Floppy disk icon on your screen. EDL Access will also format
- disks into the RT-11 format, but you must begin with a 720k DOS
- formatted disk.
-
- Notes for Proper Usage:
- ----------------------------
-
- Disks in the CMX format can only hold 34 files total. GVG
- formatted disks can hold as many files as space permits.
-
- The RT-11 disk format requires that filenames be 6 characters
- maximum, with a 3 character extension (usually ".EDL")
-
- When EDL Access is running, it displays a single window,
- through which all operations are performed. On the right
- side of the window there appears a list of files and directories
- contained in a directory on the selected hard drive. The list
- of files and directories scrolls, and you can select one or more
- items in the list using the mouse. A list of drives is
- available for selecting a drive.
-
- If you wish to delete any files in the list from the hard disk
- drive, select them with the mouse and click on the "Delete"
- button. EDL Access does not allow you to delete directories.
- A status box below the file list, displays information about
- how many bytes of data are selected in the list, and how many
- bytes are available on the opened hard disk volume. The contents
- of any directories that are selected are not included in the
- count of bytes selected.
-
- When you have inserted a floppy disk in the 3.5" floppy drive,
- click on the appropriate drive button on the upper left area of
- the EDL Access window. EDL Access will attempt to mount the disk,
- and will automatically determine whether it is a CMX or GVG disk.
- If the disk is neither one, it will ask you whether you want to
- initialize it as an RT-11 floppy disk. You should only be using
- diskettes that have been pre-formatted for the 720K DOS format.
-
- When a CMX or GVG format floppy is mounted, the left side of the
- EDL Access window displays a list of files on that disk. RT-11 is
- not a hierarchical file system, so there are no directories. You
- may use the mouse to select one or more files from this list. The
- selected files may be deleted by clicking on the Delete button. EDL
- Access will ask you to confirm each file that is to be deleted. If
- all the files are to be deleted, it may be faster to select the
- "Erase Disk" item from the "Disk" menu.
-
- There are two buttons between the two file lists. Clicking on one
- button copies selected files from the hard disk file list to the
- floppy disk, and clicking on the other button copies selected files
- from the floppy disk file list to the hard disk. You can also copy
- files by double-clicking on a file name in either one of the lists.
-
- There are times when a file cannot be copied to the floppy disk,
- even though there is enough space available on the floppy disk.
- This condition can result from the fragmenting of the disk, as files
- are added and deleted. When this condition occurs, EDL Access
- automatically "squeezes" the disk, which is to say it consolidates
- all the free space into a single block. You may also manually force
- a squeeze operation at any time by selecting the "Squeeze Disk" item
- from the "Disk" menu. The "Disk" menu contains one other item,
- called "Erase Disk". By selecting this item you can force all files
- to be deleted, and can also force the disk to be initialized with
- either the GVG or the CMX format.
-
- Known Concerns and Problems:
- --------------------------------------
-
- EDL Access does not properly recognize a write-protected disk as
- such and will allow files to be deleted from the disk. Fortunately,
- every time EDL Access has deleted a file, the file can be recovered
- by removing the disk and reinserting it. This will only work
- IMMEDIATELY after choosing delete.
-
- EDL Access has known problems when attempting to copy large
- numbers of files. THIS CAN RESULT IN DATA LOSS if you do
- not verify that a file has been copied before deleting the original.
- Safe practice will allow you to transfer up to 50 files at a time
- without error.
-
- If EDL Access ever shows signs of instability, i.e. dialogs
- appearing with no information, or dialogs informing you that the
- "Disk in Drive has Changed" when it hasn't, restart Windows
- before attempting any additional copying.
